Since the early days of building shelter, man has depended on the earth to provide natural protection from the elements, by building homes in the ground. Today, the practice still continues in frosty climates all across the United States. Having to bring plumbing down below frost zones protects the pipes from freezing. These concepts are very "green", not only in terms of building green, but also the money saved by the contractor when incorporating these building practices.
